Before the Flying Squirrel: 108 Years of Village Olympians Make Their Mark

Every four years the Olympic Games capture the imagination of millions around the world.

This year villagers will cheer on one of our own as Ellis Coleman of Oak Park competes in Greco-Roman wrestling at the London Games. Coleman, a 2009 graduate of Oak Park & River Forest High School, and the youngest member of the U.S. wrestling team, has become famous for his “Flying Squirrel” takedown move.

The move has gone viral on YouTube. But, he is only the latest in a long line of athletes from Oak Park and River Forest to represent the United States at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over one dozen area athletes have competed, going back to the 1904 Games in St. Louis.
